DENVER (AP) - A combination of power and small ball helped the Houston Astros break open a tight game in the late innings.

J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, Carlos Pena connected for a home run as part of a three-run ninth, and the Astros rallied against Colorado's bullpen to beat the Rockies 6-3 on Wednesday night.

The Astros overcame 12 strikeouts and Troy Tulowitzki's first multihomer game since 2011 in taking the opener of a two-game interleague set at Coors Field.

Leading 3-2, Houston got a boost when Pena started the ninth with his fourth homer, driving a full-count offering from Rob Scahill over the right-field wall.

Trevor Crowe followed by beating out an infield single and one out later, pinch-hitter Jimmy Parades singled to left, advancing Crowe to third. Marwin Gonzalez followed with a safety squeeze, laying down a sacrifice bunt as Crowe broke for the plate and scored.

"It was absolutely perfect," Crowe said. "I felt like the last 15 steps, I walked home because the bunt could not have been better. On a safety squeeze, you want to roll it down the first-base line and Marwin was able to do that."

Brandon Barnes singled to drive in the inning's final run for the Astros.

"That was good baseball there," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "The three runs in the ninth were huge in this ballpark. Guys did a great job. Getting the sacrifice bunt down, Trevor going first to third and Gonzo, great job with the safety squeeze and the two-out RBI was huge. A four-run lead here is really a two-run lead."

Paul Clemens (3-2) pitched 1 2-3 innings of scoreless relief.

Gonzalez led off the eighth with a single off reliever Edgmer Escalona (1-2). Jose Altuve was intentionally walked and Rex Brothers relieved Escalona. Brothers struck out Jason Castro but Martinez hit a two-out single up the middle, scoring Gonzalez to put the Astros in front by a run.

"This guy's a run producer," Porter said of Martinez. "He's one of those guys, when there are RBIs out there, he smells them. He's put together some of his best at-bats with runners in scoring position."

Colorado had runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but first baseman Pena made a diving catch of Jordan Pacheco's liner to end the threat.

"Of course it's frustrating, but that's how baseball goes," Pacheco said. "We've just got to keep swinging, keep getting guys on."

Tulowitzki homered in the ninth off reliever Jose Veras and off starter Erik Bedard in the fourth for his seventh career multihomer game. The last was Aug. 27, 2011, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Rockies couldn't take advantage of a solid start from Tyler Chatwood, who struck out 10 batters in six innings.

"Tyler did a great job," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "We didn't get the big hit to get the big inning. But Tyler certainly did his part."

The strikeout total was the most in a game by a Rockies starter this season and a career high for Chatwood, who allowed two runs on four hits.

"I think I was getting ahead and I was able to put some guys away with my slider," Chatwood said. "Me and Jimmy (Wright, Rockies pitching coach) worked on it in our last side session. It's been kind of inconsistent, but I found it tonight."

Bedard also pitched well and did not get a decision. He went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. It was the third consecutive outing in which he has allowed only two runs.

Houston struck first, getting a run in the second inning on Matt Dominguez's sacrifice fly.

Tulowitzki answered leading off the fourth, when he drove the first offering from Bedard the opposite way into the right-field seats. It was his 11th home run of the season and also produced the 500th run scored of his career.

Tulowitzki's two-out double in the fifth drove in Pacheco. But the Astros tied it up at 2-all in the sixth when Barnes scored on a sacrifice fly by Castro.

Chatwood escaped further damage in the inning when he fanned Martinez and Pena for his ninth and 10th strikeouts of the game. His previous high for strikeouts was six.

NOTES: The Rockies recalled Scahill from Triple A Colorado Springs and made room for him by optioning OF Charlie Blackmon. ... Colorado stranded 12 baserunners. ... The Rockies are six games into a stretch in which they play 17 games in 17 days. ... The Astros, whose Triple-A affiliate is in Oklahoma City, raised $21,000 this week through the Astros Foundation to aid Oklahoma's tornado relief efforts. The money is being forwarded to the Red Cross. ... The Rockies acquired Chatwood two years ago from the Angels in exchange for catcher Chris Iannetta. ... Martinez has had back-to-back games with multiple hits.

91% Frances Ha

All Critics (77) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (70) | Rotten (7)

The dialogue and editing are zippy and generally charming, combining with the tart observations of 20-something culture to create a nice frisson.

A black-and-white salute to the French New Wave (the score is borrowed from Georges Delerue, composer of many a Truffaut and Godard film) that manages to be very much of this moment ...

The movie's a love letter to an actress and her character, but by the end you may feel like an intervention is more in order.

The obvious love of New York City echoes Woody Allen at his best. But "Frances Ha" is very much its own film, a story of life and love and messy rooms.

Baumbach ... makes the film a celebration of Gerwig's coltish, goofball appeal.

Late-blooming 20-somethings have never been so perfectly captured -- and Gerwig has never been more appealing -- than in this funny, tender, life-affirming movie.

The light Frances Ha provides skittish moments of heartbreak and confusion on the humorous path to adulthood, but it sends a comforting message that our fate may use the same language as our dreams even if it doesn't tell the same story.

Easily Baumbach's warmest and most upbeat film to date.

Mostly the movie is the best showcase so far for Gerwig's brand of lovely klutziness (and)a contemporary everywoman appeal that's impossible to dismiss, making Frances' self-absorption easier to swallow and tasty, too.

One of the most appealing films of the year to date -- and it may well end up being the most appealing indie release of the entire year

This is a tough one, but I must recommend it, if you are at all inclined to witness creativity at its unconventional best.

"Frances Ha"? More like Frances Bah!

Gerwig dances the Millennial Limbo

...caters to the Gerwig persona while also sanding off the edges of Baumbach's usual bitterness.

"Frances Ha" is about the inevitability of adulthood; it can be postponed, but it can't be avoided.

[a] fresh-faced and spirited black and white comedy...

If Frances has a chance, there's hope for us all.

The near-incomparable Greta Gerwig gives Frances a fire, an exuberance, and a three-dimensional uniqueness that ensures the viewer never sways from her side.

It gives you two choices: find it delightful or don't: there is no unique, self-guided option. As frustrating as that conundrum may be, it's still hard not to take option one.

Without Gerwig, this story of a hopeful young woman making her way in New York would have been just like all the rest. Instead, it's a work of art.

But there's just something so relentlessly likable about put-upon, impoverished Frances (Greta Gerwig) that it almost doesn't matter that her New York is just one big Williamsburg.

Huawei Windows Phone appears in render, said to be the Ascend W2

Huawei Windows Phone appears in render, could be the Ascend W2

It feels almost unfaithful to the Ascend W1 to be looking at a potential sequel already, but that's what evleaks claims this is. How he got the image we have no idea, and neither do we have any price or specs to go with it -- it's just this lone render of a Huawei handset running Windows Phone 8 in Chinese. There was actually a previous leak back in April (shown after the break), which also purported to be the Ascend W2 and which did come with some detail: a 720p 4.3-inch display, Snapdragon S4 chip, 8MP rear camera and 1GB RAM for $289. However, today's picture fails to match up with the earlier one in a number of respects, not least in the shape of the bottom edge and in the position of the front camera / sensor opening next to the earpiece, which means the only certainty here is that they can't both be right.

Key to development of peripheral nervous system uncovered

May 28, 2013 ? Patients suffering from hereditary neuropathy may have hope for new treatment thanks to a Geisinger study that uncovered a key to the development of the peripheral nervous system.

In an article published today in the online medical journal Nature Communications, Geisinger researchers found that a protein present within immune system cells plays a larger role than previously thought in the development of the peripheral nervous system.

Nikolaos Tapinos, M.D., Ph.D., director of neurosurgery research and staff scientist at Geisinger's Sigfried and Janet Weis Center for Research, said the findings could have implications in how hereditary neuropathy is treated. Hereditary neuropathy affects the peripheral nervous system, causing subtle symptoms such as muscle weakness, wasting and numbness that worsen over time.

"When the peripheral nervous system develops in utero, certain proteins control how the cells travel throughout the body to the proper locations," Dr. Tapinos said. "Some of those proteins are already known, but this is the first time that the protein Lck has been identified as integral to this process."

Lck, or lymphocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase, is a protein that is found inside specialized cells of the immune system. Dr. Tapinos' research found that Lck controls how cells called Schwann cells migrate across neurons throughout the peripheral nervous system.

Schwann cells function by creating the myelin sheath, the fatty covering that acts as an insulator around nerve fibers. In humans, the production of myelin begins in the 14th week of fetal development and continues through infancy and adolescence. When errors occur in the creation of myelin, hereditary neuropathy such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), a motor and sensory neuropathy, can result.

"What we have found is that Lck is essentially the 'switch' that signals migration of the Schwann cells and production of the myelin sheath," Dr. Tapinos said. "This finding sets the stage for further research into the specific molecular mechanisms that occur in order for this process to break down, and eventually toward developing treatments to prevent it."

Nature Communications is an online-only, multidisciplinary journal dedicated to publishing high-quality research in all areas of the biological, physical and chemical sciences. Papers published by the journal represent important advances within each field.

Other authors on the article are Jennifer Ness Myers and Kristin Snyder, both of Geisinger's Sigfried and Janet Weis Center for Research.

TuneIn Raises $25M Round Led By IVP, Already Surpassed 1B Listening Hours This Year

TuneIn_logoTuneIn, the popular online radio service, today announced that it has raised a $25 million funding round led by Institutional Venture Partners (IVP) with participation from many of its previous investors, including Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures, and General Catalyst Partners. Jules Maltz, a General Partner at IVP, who will join the TuneIn board of directors. TuneIn Raises $25M Round Led By IVP, Already Surpassed 1B Listening Hours This Year TuneIn also today announced that it surpassed 1 billion listening hours for this year in April, making it the top online destinations for live audio content (and likely the #2 online music destination behind Pandora). As TuneIn’s CEO John Donham told me earlier this week, the company plans to use this new round of financing, which comes less than a year after it raised a $16 million round in 2012, to continue to invest in content and its product. One area the service is clearly going to focus on is on providing more services for the broadcasters that opt to use its services to get access to online listeners. While Donham didn’t go into details, he did note how many local stations still run the same local ads online, even though the online listener is often anything but local. The company, it seems, may soon allow these broadcasters to substitute their local ads for more targeted messages. As for adding content on the platform, Donham said that while TuneIn already features quite a bit of content (over 70,000 FM, AM, HD and online radio stations and 2 million on-demand programs), the ultimate goal is obviously to “have everything.” One group of stations it may have trouble with, though, is Clear Channel’s lineup. Clear Channel, which owns the competing iHeartRadio platform, is using a walled garden strategy in his view, while TuneIn offers an open platform for stations. He does believe, however, that it is still very early in the game (and he cited this new funding round as an example) and that the business is really just starting out to live up to its potential. TuneIn says it currently has about 40 million active listeners in over 230 countries and territories. It powered 227 million listening sessions of more than 60 seconds in March. The service recently launched its TuneIn Live service and a major redesign on the desktop. The majority of its growth, however, comes from mobile listeners, where it

A Foundation For The Future: How One Non-Profit Is Empowering ...

Women of West Africa Entrepreneurship (WOWe) speaks to new advisory board member Njideka U. Harry about her work with the Youth Technology Foundation, her experiences as a young Nigerian woman seeking education through technology and later experiences as an entrepreneur.

WOWe: Why was the Youth Technology Foundation started and what work does it do?

NH: Youth for Technology Foundation (YTF) was founded in 2000. YTF is a non-profit company focused on using the power of technology to provide opportunities for people living in developing nations. YTF designs and implements business and economic development training programs for youth and women.

WOWe: Why did you decide to get involved in the issue of technology for youth development?

NH: YTF was founded based on my personal experience moving to the U.S. from Nigeria at 18 in pursuit of a college education. The challenges I faced when I moved here were not cultural or social, indeed they were mostly related to technology and its use in education. After college, I began my career first at General Electric and then at Microsoft.
I founded YTF during my career at Microsoft in the late 90?s. I was living the ?Google 20 percent time? policy even before Google was founded. When you are hired at Google today, you only have to do the job you were hired for 80% of the time. The other 20% of the time, you can work on whatever you like, provided it advances Google in some way.

Well, while at Microsoft, I was in Corporate Finance. I focused on doing this work 80% of the time and the other 20% of my time, I spent on intrapreneurial projects in the company. Microsoft, at the time, was looking for a way to do business in Nigeria. I proposed moving into the country first with a corporate social responsibility initiative to establish credibility and commitment and then open an office. I convinced Microsoft?s Community Affairs group to provide seed funding for the establishment of the Owerri Digital Village, YTF?s pioneer community technology and learning center. At the same time, I provided guidance around the Nigerian market, strategy, resources and stakeholders.

WOWe: Why is the work you do with YTF so essential to development in places such as West Africa?

NH: Africa is the world?s youngest continent. We invest in youth because they have the longest productivity cycle and are co-creators of powerful solutions. We invest in women, the mothers of those youths, because they are the backbone of communities in West Africa. Women re-invest 90% of their household income in their families, their children ? their health and education. It is important that we provide an enabling environment and equip them with the knowledge and resources they need to continue to sustain themselves and their communities. We know that providing women and girls with the choices and chances for education, economic opportunity, and access to health care, we know she will better her family, her community, and her society.

WOWe: What synergies made you decide to work with WOWe?

NH: Women in many ways hold the key to economic growth ? the key to the future. Female entrepreneurs in Nigeria are often underestimated and overlooked. They are hindered because of cultural barriers such as gender role definitions that label women inherently inferior to men. The WOWe platform helps promote female entrepreneurship and is a channel for women to learn and share. The opportunity to be a part of such a pioneering platform of growth for women in Nigeria is very much in line with YTF?s vision.

WOWe: How do you perceive the state of play in tech for young West African women?

NH: Technology and tech-based tools can provide access to life-changing opportunities for women. Technology is not a panacea in itself; however, it is a means. West Africa?s technological revolution is driven by mobile phones. YTF recently partnered with the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women on the ?Nigerian Women Entrepreneurs and Mobile Value Added Services? project that is set out to train 2000 women entrepreneurs in Nigeria to use MVAS to support their businesses. West Africa will rise with the rest of the world in this age. Technology is enabling us to solve our problems in our unique ways. When a woman can pay her children?s fees via SMS, you can tell how far we have come.

WOWe: What advice do you have for budding young West African entrepreneurs? What are your 3 top empowerment tips for youth of today?

NH: Sheryl Sandberg?s ?Lean In? tips do not work for entrepreneurs. When you are a leader of your own organization or your own company, staying late and putting in the extra hours is the norm, not the exception. Be prepared to do this. In terms of empowering today?s youth I?d say find a mentor, don?t lean back, ?lean in? and have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

WOWE: Who inspired you when you were starting out and why?

NH: My dad, an educator and my mom an eduTrepreneur, a term I have coined for educator turned entrepreneur, provided a very strong foundation of giving back, paying it forward. For them service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth (Mohammed Ali). In addition, they stressed general humility. My dad always said, you have worked hard, you have a certain skill set but don?t forget two things; luck and timing. Everybody matters and to a certain degree if you don?t forget where you came from it is very easy to keep a balanced perspective.

WOWe: Have you any lessons to share from your own experiences as a young female entrepreneur?

NH: Being an entrepreneur is sometimes lonely. Being a young female entrepreneur is super lonely. But don?t get discouraged. You will make mistakes, everyone does. Don?t make the same mistake twice. Stop and learn from it the first time. You have to take calculated risks and act fast. I keep a ?self-reflection? journal. As we are in constant motion and hyper-communicative mode each day, it is important to take the time to step back and ask yourself what really matters; what are your values, what are your goals? If you don?t self-reflect, you cannot know yourself well enough to lead other people. Balance is key. Take time to understand all sides of issues you are faced with. It isn?t about being right; it is about doing the right thing.
Know that your time is limited, so don?t spend it trying to be someone else. Be you. I remember one of my professors in business school teaching us to keep the number 168 in mind. It?s the number of hours we have in each week. Assuming we sleep an average of 8 hours a day, work an average of 10 hours a day, technically we have ?used up? 126 hours. The difference of 42 hours, on average 6 hours a day, is what I have left in my week. I make every effort to use it wisely and spend as much of that time with my family ? my husband and three young daughters. Finally, have the self confidence to know that every day you are given can be better than the day before.

WOWe: What are you most looking forward to at the WOWe conference in June?

NH: WoWe is an incredible platform to learn from some of Nigeria?s most successful women business leaders to share ideas on cultivating success in an effort to expand YTF?s network of human and social capital.

WOWe
: What does the Schwab recognition mean for YTF?

NH: We are so humbled, so honored. The recognition is an opportunity for YTF to multiply our impact and reach more youth and women as we go into this next decade. It is really a stamp of credibility for the work we have so tirelessly been committed to over the last 12 years. The Schwab / World Economic Forum network is an amazing platform to liaise with some of the most incredible individuals and organizations across the public, private and civil society sectors, to share our successes and challenges with them and learn from best practices in the industry.

Search ongoing for passenger in NY plane crash

EPHRATAH, N.Y. (AP) ? A crew aboard a helicopter and dozens of other searchers scoured the woods and water in central New York for a third day Monday without finding a brain cancer patient who was on a volunteer medical flight that crashed last week. He is presumed dead.

Frank and Evelyn Amerosa of Utica, N.Y., were aboard an Angel Flight on Friday night when the twin-engine aircraft went down in Ephratah, a sleepy town about an hour west of Albany, according to police and family members.

John Campbell, 70, of Stamford, Conn., was flying the couple back from the Boston area, where Frank Amerosa was being treated for brain cancer, officials and family said.

The bodies of both Campbell and Evelyn Amerosa were recovered from the rural crash site. Searchers continued to look for the body of 64-year-old Frank Amerosa on Monday, authorities said.

Ephratah Town Supervisor Todd Bradt said the effort would resume Tuesday.

Frank Amerosa, a retired trucker, had been diagnosed with brain cancer more than a year ago. Evelyn Amerosa, 58, worked at an area nursing home directing residents in activities like bingo and trips ? a job she loved, said her daughter Heather Theobald. She said her mother had been with her step-father for at least 16 years. The couple loved to travel and had recently returned from the Bahamas.

"Very happy, very much love, very optimistic, they did everything for anybody," Theobald said. "They were just very good people. They were loved by a lot of people."

Campbell was a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, a nonprofit group that arranges free air transportation for the sick. Angel Flight Northeast said it has set up free air transportation and medical care for more than 65,000 children and adults on about 60,000 flights covering more than 12 million miles. It was founded in 1996.

"John loved to fly and truly believed in the mission of Angel Flight. He loved volunteering his time and we take some solace in the fact he died doing something he loved while trying to help others," according to a family statement.

Rescue workers have been scouring woods and a big, murky pond where the bulk of the aircraft was submerged. Wreckage from the crash was dispersed over a large area, with pieces of the plane and documents found as far as five miles away.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Eric Weiss said equipment and personnel were expected at the scene Monday afternoon to begin pulling the fuselage from the water. Other debris has been collected from surrounding woods and fields and will be examined along with the main body of wreckage. Investigators are also looking for smartphones, GPS devices, computer tablets or other items that could "give the investigators some electronic evidence of what happened in the last minutes of flight," he said.

The Piper PA 34 departed from Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass., and was headed to Rome, N.Y., before it crashed just after 5 p.m. Friday, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said. The plane did not issue a distress call before losing radar and radio contact, the NTSB said.

Weiss said a preliminary NTSB report on the accident will be issued in about two weeks, with a final report on the probable cause in about 18 months.

Witnesses described the destruction that started in the air above Ephratah.

Joan Dudley, owner of Granny's Ice Cream Shanty, which is less than a mile from the crash site, said she and her employees saw the plane flip, then fall apart Friday night.

"Parts and pieces of it were flying through the sky, and a body fell out," Dudley said.

They called 911 as they parked their car and ran to the crash site in the rain to see if they could rescue anyone.

"Airplane parts were all over the place," she said. "They were picking them up all over."

Ephratah resident Roger Berry, 75, said he was outside chopping wood when the plane crashed.

"When I heard it, I knew something was wrong," Berry said.

Berry said he heard a bang, then saw pieces of the plane fall from the sky. A motor fell 50 feet from his neighbor's bedroom, where she was sleeping, Berry said.

Hackers Accessed Sensitive Military Weapons Plans: Report

http://www.kidsmathgamesonline.com/images/pictures/shapes/pentagon.jpgHackers are being accused of accessing design plans for more than two dozen sensitive U.S. weapons systems in a report by the Pentagon?s Defense Science Board [DSB], the Washington Post reports.

According to the Post, the systems were disclosed in a confidential section of a report by the DSB. A public version of the report with the section missing was released in January. According to the Post, the design documents accessed by the hackers included plans for missile defense systems such as the PAC-3 Patriot missile system and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense [THAAD] system. The hackers also got their hands on plans for the F/A-18 fighter jet, the V-22 Osprey aircraft as well as other aircraft and vessels.

?DoD and its contractor base have already sustained staggering losses of system design information incorporating decades of combat knowledge and experience that provide adversaries insight to technical designs and system use,? the board wrote in the public iteration of the report.

The DSB report did not indicate who was responsible for stealing the designs. However unidentified senior military and defense industry officials familiar with the breaches said most of the blame lies with a burgeoning Chinese espionage campaign targeting the U.S. defense industry. China has historically denied any connection with cyber-attacks, though a recent report from the bipartisan Commission on the Theft of American Intellectual Property said China accounts for as much as 80 percent of U.S. intellectual property theft.

In its report, the DSB declared that after conducting an 18-month study, a DSB task force found that the country cannot be confident its critical information technology systems will work under attack from a ?sophisticated and well-resourced opponent? using cyber capabilities in conjunction with their military and intelligence resources. The Department of Defense needs to respond by building an effective response, according to the report.

?Nearly every conceivable component within DoD is networked,? the report notes. ?These networked systems and components are inextricably linked to the Department?s ability to project military force and the associated mission assurance. Yet, DoD?s networks are built on inherently insecure architectures that are composed of, and increasingly using, foreign parts. While DoD takes great care to secure the use and operation of the ?hardware? of its weapon systems, the same level of resource and attention is not spent on the complex network of information technology (IT) systems that are used to support and operate those weapons or critical IT capabilities embedded within them.?

?You?ve seen significant improvements in Chinese military capabilities through their willingness to spend, their acquisitions of advanced Russian weapons, and from their cyber-espionage campaign,? James A. Lewis, a cyber-policy expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told the Washington Post. ?Ten years ago, I used to call the PLA [People?s Liberation Army] the world?s largest open-air military museum. I can?t say that now.?

Ethiopian marathon runner honors Boston victims

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? The winner of the men's race at the Boston Marathon says he is returning his winner's medal to honor the city and those killed and injured in the terrorist bombings near the finish line of one of the world's top running events.

Lelisa Desisa says sport should be a pleasure and never a battlefield. He made the announcement Sunday at a ceremony with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. Kerry also honored the woman's runner-up and the men's third place finisher. All three athletes are from Ethiopia.

The April 15 explosions killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Kerry is in Ethiopia to mark the 50th anniversary of the African Union.

Seen and heard in Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) ? Associated Press journalists open their notebooks at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival

UNCOMFORTABLE MOMENTS FOR ACTRESS AS DAD WATCH LOVE SCENES:

Talk about awkward.

Not only did Adele Exarchopoulos' father watch the graphic sex scenes between her and another woman in the movie "Blue Is The Warmest Color (La Vie D'Adele)," in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, she was with him when he took in the film at its premier.

"During the love scenes I was ill at ease with my father being there, but at the same time I wanted him to be there. And I knew that he would probably have a very good reaction because it's all a question of intelligence and he's intelligent and therefore would understand," said Exarchopoulos.

She added:

"During the sex scene I was looking at him, like, 'Oh my god, how does he feel' because I don't want to make him uncomfortable, you know?" the 19-year-old said in an interview. "I think I was trying to take a certain distance from what was happening during the love scenes."

In the film, Exarchopoulos stars as 15-year-old Adele. She's heterosexual, but after meeting co-star Lea Seydoux's Emma, falls in love and begins to struggle with her sexuality.

Exarchopoulos said she and Seydoux shared nervous giggles before filming the intimate scenes, but that's it.

"It really developed, there was no choreography at all. We tried to put ourselves in the situation, and it helped in a way that I was new to the situation because my character is new to the situation as well," she said. "So it was alright that I was destabilized. Lea was leading me and I was kind of following in the flow. But I must say it was a strong thing to play."

This is one of two films Seydoux is promoting at this year's festival. The other, "Grand Central," from director Rebecca Zlotowski, is showing in the Un Certain Regard category.

The actress, who cut her hair and dyed it blue for "Adele," said she liked the challenge of her role.

"I really enjoyed playing this part, this tomboy even if it was very difficult sometimes. I like to play parts that are complex, and I like ambiguity and I like contradictions as well, she's like, I like to really give something very subtle," she said.

LI YU CHUN IS BREAKING THE MOLD

Li Yu Chun doesn't exactly mesh with the image of most starlets who walk on the red carpets at the Cannes Film Festival.

Instead of flowing gowns, the Chinese singer has worn dramatic capes that accompany striking pantsuits. And while many female celebrities sport cascading locks, Chun has her hair cut short, pixie style.

"A lot of people are asking me 'Why aren't you wearing a long dress like a princess?'" said Chun, who came to the festival as a representative of the cosmetics brand L'Oreal. "I have another personality and that is why I have to show my own personality with the suits that fit me. That is why I love to work with L'Oreal because they have given me self-confidence."

Chun, who is known for her boyish, androgynous looks, said she was surprised to be chosen as a L'Oreal ambassador since she represents a different look than some of their other representatives at the festival, like Freida Pinto, Julianne Moore, Aishwarya Rai and Eva Longoria.

"Usually they choose girls with long hair and big waves in her hair and that is not exactly my image," she laughed. "That is why I was surprised but happily surprised."

Chun shot to fame when she won "Chinese Best Voices," that country's version of "American Idol. She said she was excited to be in Cannes for the festivities, but was also getting some work done as well.

"I am also participating in their meetings to discuss about how to represent and how to organize promoting events," the 29-year-old said. "They are organizing a lot of activities for me too and this is why I find it very very exciting."

'JIMMY P' ROLES WERE MADE FOR DEL TORO AND AMALRIC ? LITERALLY

For director Arnaud Desplechin, it was either Benicio Del Toro and Mathieu Amalric for "Jimmy P" or no movie.

"I thought if I can't have them, I won't do the film," he said in an interview this week.

Luckily for him, both Benicio Del Toro and Mathieu Amalric said yes to the project.

In "Jimmy P (Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian)," Amalric plays real-life French analyst Georges Devereux, who moved to the United States in the 1930s. He spent time living with Mojave Indians and helped develop the field of ethno-psychiatry, which studies the ways mental illness is understood in different cultural contexts.

Del Toro is his patient Jimmy Picard, who returned from World War II in France with a head injury and debilitating psychological symptoms his doctors were unable to diagnose.

Desplechin said it's the first time he's written a film with actors already in mind.

"I was so nervous when I started it because it was quite difficult to produce because the film is half French, half American, so it was quite tricky," he said. "So before writing it I was thinking who could play in that? I wrote it really for Benicio and Mathieu, they were the two guys."

LG may bring Google TVs to Korea, China soon; seeing 'good returns' in the US

LG will reportedly offer Google TVs in Korea, China soon, seeing 'good returns' in the US

While Eric Schmidt's proclamation that "most" new TVs would have Google TV embedded last year didn't come true, LG stated today that it's bringing the platform to more regions soon. The Korea Times reports an unnamed company executive at the KCTA Digital Cable Show stated the platform is yielding good returns, with average sales of 10,000 units per month. He went on to state that LG Electronics would bring Google TVs to Korea later this year -- following the integrated IPTV boxes offered by LG Uplus -- and China after that. Microsoft is apparently ready to follow Google TV's lead with HDMI passthrough and TV overlays, we'll see if it can gain traction at home and overseas before others catch up.

Take Advantage Of Airline Employee Travel Benefits ? Hot Article ...

Staff should qualify for airline employee travel discount prices on leisure vacations, not with the carrier who employs them alone. Whether you?re travelling on vacation by sea, air, car, bus or cruise, significant perks exist for most employees. It is one of the considerable recompenses for working in long stints far from home. You can enjoy discounts whenever you?re looking to travel for leisure and enjoyment with your family.

If you?re newly employed as ground crew, a flight attendant or in the pilot field, it?s worth looking into the potential discounts you?re eligible for. Yes, the aircraft carrier company you work for will offer a staff discount scheme, but this is not the only option. Thanks to alliances and partnerships, there are discounts to be had with other carriers, which may prove to be even more lucrative than the ones being provided by your own employer.

Plus, hotels, car hire and cruises are often discounted for employees of airlines. So it?s not your carrier alone who will offer rock-bottom staff fares. Now, several schemes exist, usually organised and run over the internet, which can offer airport and liner staff cheaper holidays and services. Here?s what to look for when choosing the right scheme or schemes to get those discounted tickets.

Firstly, ask existing colleagues who have been with the firm for some time who they use. Google searches will yield several choices, so it?s worth getting a personal recommendation or two. You?ll be looking for a reputable, secure and well established, specialized travel company.

Then, check the scheme doesn?t charge you to register. Don?t get scammed; don?t give over any money. You should need provide proof of your employment and, usually, your employee ID tag. Look for scheme with secure servers, where any page you?re required to give details have an https:// prefix. Avoid potential identity theft. This is a prime reason to ask around for who colleagues trust and use.

Then, check who also gets the discounts in your family. Spouse, children/dependants should qualify, but good schemes will discount to parents or siblings too. Those retired from a company should still be eligible too.

Finally, look at how the companies notified you about last minute offers, hot deals and standbys. These may yield the largest savings: up to 80% less than regular fares for true airline staff. Maybe the scheme sends email updates or SMS messages about the best and cheapest offers. Consider your hours and when you?ll have access to the internet, making sure you won?t miss any good deals.

Sign up and registration should be straightforward and secure. Then, you?re able to enjoy your vacations for considerably less money. Take the family along and fly without working for once. You sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that your flight, bus, rail or cruise ticket is cheaper than anyone except other staff enjoying the same benefits. The job can be long and hard, so it?s well worth making sure you?re eligible for airline employee travel discounts, both with your own company and with others.

Google Trekker to put the Galapagos Islands on Street View, one tortoise at a time

Google Street View Trekker charts the Galapagos Islands, one tortoise at a time

Google's Street View Trekker has already captured some dramatic scenery in its young life, but we haven't seen it venture far beyond US borders. The company is making up for that in style through its recently completed image-gathering expedition to the Galapagos Islands. The visit will produce 360-degree shots of 10 representative areas chosen by the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Galapagos National Parks Directorate. There's more involved than just stunning Google Maps imagery, however: the panoramas will help document any threats to the local climate and wildlife. While we'll only see the results of the Galapagos trip later this year, it's good to know that they should help both humans and slow-moving reptiles in equal measure.

(AP) ? A lawsuit filed by two massage therapists who sued retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre over claims he sent racy text messages has been settled, a lawyer for the women said Friday.

Lawyer David Jaroslawicz wouldn't comment on the terms of the settlement, saying only that the case had been "resolved and discontinued."

Christina Scavo and Shannon O'Toole had alleged in a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages that in 2008, while Favre was playing for the New York Jets, they lost their part-time jobs with the team after complaining that he sent sexually suggestive texts to another therapist.

During the 2008 preseason, the lawsuit alleged, the three-time NFL MVP sent another woman a text message asking to get together with her and Scavo, followed by another text saying, "I guess I have bad intentions."

After Scavo's husband asked Favre to apologize, she and O'Toole lost gigs with the Jets, the lawsuit said.

A lawyer for Favre didn't immediately respond to a call for comment Friday but has denied the allegations in the past, arguing in court papers that if the therapists lost work Favre wasn't responsible for it. A lawyer for the Jets also didn't immediately respond to a call seeking comment Friday.

The therapists' lawsuit was filed five days after the NFL fined Favre $50,000 for not being forthright in an investigation into allegations that he sent bawdy text messages and photos to former Jets game hostess Jenn Sterger when they both worked for the team. During that investigation, media reports claimed Favre also had pursued massage therapists, but the NFL said it was unable to get enough information to decide whether the reports were substantiated.

The Jets have said O'Toole and Scavo worked for the team for a combined total of five days over two years, making $2,300 in all, and were never guaranteed ongoing work. The team wasn't told about the women's concerns and simply turned to other massage therapists after its training facility moved in 2008, its officials and lawyers have said in court filings.

Favre retired from the NFL in 2010, after playing for 20 seasons, mostly with the Green Bay Packers. He began his career with the Atlanta Falcons and ended it with the Minnesota Vikings.

Sony Will ?Never Ever Ever? Let Go Of Spider-Man Movie Rights

Spiderman

One of the unreported bits of silliness that I stepped over in the last few days was a largely speculative ?rumour? that Sony might sell off the Spider-Man movie rights. It all stemmed from a bit of financial advice the company had received, suggesting it sell some assets and buoy themselves on the great Red Sea of accountant?s ink.

Yeah, well, forget that.

Ain?t It Cool put their brand power to use, and got Sony Picture?s Co-Chair Amy Pascal on the line for a quick chat.

Not only did she admit a personal stake ? and so she might, the Spider-Man films are perhaps the biggest hit of her tenure at the studio, and something she has been very much involved with ? Pascal added that she?d ?never ever ever? let the rights slip out of grasp.

Never ever ever?

YouTube Preview Image

That?s right. Never ever ever. Ever.

As you might expect, Pascal also took this opportunity to tell the world that she?s really thrilled with work on the new film. Which is nice. I hope we all are too. The last one was pretty divisive, but hell, I don?t think I can fault the casting and I do want to see these guys back and working with better material.

Arias speaks out about case in jailhouse interview

PHOENIX (AP) ? In a surprise jailhouse interview just hours after a jury began deliberating her fate, Jodi Arias spoke out Tuesday about her murder trial, her many fights with her legal team and her belief that she "deserves a second chance at freedom someday."

Arias spoke to The Associated Press as part of a series of interviews with media outlets. She repeated many of her claims from previous interviews, testimony on the witness stand and her statements to the jury earlier Tuesday as she pleaded for mercy.

But she provided some new information about her case and how she believed her lawyers let her down by not calling more witnesses who could have bolstered her claims that she was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of Travis Alexander.

Arias was convicted last week of first-degree murder in the June 2008 stabbing and shooting death of her one-time lover in what prosecutors described as a cold, calculated killing carried out in a jealous rage. Arias has maintained all along it was self-defense.

The jury began deliberating Tuesday as they worked to determine whether she should live or die for her crime. If the jury opts for a life sentence, the judge will have the option of determining whether she spends the rest of her days behind bars or is eligible for release after 25 years. Arias acknowledged it was unlikely she would ever be released, but believed she deserves a second chance.

Following her conviction last week, she told a local TV station that she preferred the death penalty. She said Tuesday night that she changed her mind after a tearful meeting with family members that same day, realizing that her death would only cause them more pain.

"I felt like by asking for death, it's like asking for assisted suicide and I didn't want to do that to my family," she told the AP.

Arias said she fought from the beginning to keep cameras out of the courtroom to limit the media spectacle, and believes that the jury should have been sequestered. She stated flatly that she did not receive a fair trial.

"The prosecutor has accused me of wanting to be famous, which is not true," she said.

However, Arias has sought the spotlight at every turn, providing TV interviews and even using a third-party to tweet throughout the trial.

Arias repeated her claims that she never wanted to go to trial in the first place but instead wanted to reach a deal with prosecutors on a second-degree murder count that would have carried a maximum of 22 years in prison. However, she said, "no deal was offered."

She gave the interviews Tuesday after the judge lifted an order barring jail officials from arranging any media requests. The judge did not elaborate on the reason for the ruling, but Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office quickly began making the media arrangements that lasted late into the night.

A shackled Arias wore makeup for the interviews and showed up in a jail classroom with a comb in hand as she fixed her hair for the cameras. When pressed for details on some of her conflicting stories, she was mostly evasive, citing advice from her attorneys and possible pending appeals.

She was also asked about the conflicts she had had with her two court-appointed lawyers, Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott.

Arias said she wanted at least three people called as witnesses who could have testified to having seen bruises on her neck "when I was choked out" by Alexander but she said she was rebuffed by her lawyers. The prosecutor insisted her claims of self-defense were an exaggerated attempt to avoid being convicted.

She said her lawyers "felt a little betrayed" and blindsided by her post-conviction interview but that they gave their blessings for Tuesday night's interviews, warning her to be cautious.

Arias said she sometimes wishes she'd never met Alexander, "just because of how ultimately everything ended and I say that for his sake and mine ? not just a selfish thing."

She said if the attack never occurred and she never crossed paths with the victim, she would likely now be a happily married 32-year-old with children, good finances and a successful wedding photography business.

Earlier Tuesday, Arias told jurors she planned to use her time in prison to bring about positive changes, including donating her hair to be made into wigs for cancer victims, helping establish prison recycling programs and designing T-shirts to raise money for domestic abuse victims.

Arias became emotional as she displayed for jurors photos of her friends, boyfriends and family members, including newborn relatives she has met only from behind bars.

She asked jurors to reject the death penalty for the sake of her family.

"I'm asking you to please, please don't do that to them. I've already hurt them so badly, along with so many other people," she said. "I want everyone's healing to begin, and I want everyone's pain to stop."

Arias stabbed and slashed Alexander nearly 30 times, shot in him in the forehead and slit his throat, nearly decapitating him, before leaving his body in his shower to be found by friends about five days later.

"To this day, I can hardly believe I was capable of such violence. But I know that I was," Arias told jurors. "And for that, I'm going to be sorry for the rest of my life."

Her speech to jurors came a day after her attorneys asked to be removed from the case, saying the five-month trial had become a witch hunt that prompted death threats against a key witness in the penalty phase. They also argued for a mistrial. The judge denied both requests.

Alexander's family showed little emotion as Arias' mother, father and sister looked on from the other side of the gallery and cried.

After Arias finished speaking, Judge Sherry Stephens explained to jurors that their finding would be final.

The jury heard closing arguments later Tuesday, with Willmott citing Arias' mental health problems and lack of a criminal record among the reasons to spare her life.

"The question now before you is: Do you kill her? Do you kill her for the one act that she did, the one horrible act, or can you see that there is a reason to let her live? Can you see that there is value in her life?" she said.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez said that despite Arias' claims, there were no factors in the case that would warrant a sentence other than death.

He implored jurors to look at the "whole panorama" of the case, not just Arias' statement Tuesday, and explained how Alexander's family will live with the pain of their loss for the rest of their lives.

"They can't forget that what happened on that afternoon, Travis Victor Alexander suffered immense physical pain," Martinez said. "They can't forget that."

Religious Freedom in Our Military; This Is What Intolerance Smells Like

http://www.christianpost.com/news/re...ls-like-95058/

"President Obama's new "religious tolerance" consultant to the Pentagon, Mikey Weinstein, wants Christian military service members who openly talk about their faith in uniform to be charged with treason, which is a crime punishable by death according to military law.
By employing his consulting services, and as Commander-in-Chief, President Obama is effectively endorsing Weinstein's recently voiced and written views such as: "Today, we face incredibly well-funded gangs of fundamentalist Christian monsters who terrorize their fellow Americans by forcing their weaponized [sic] and twisted version of Christianity upon their helpless subordinates in our nation's armed forces.""

More than 60% of retailers lack unified communications' awareness ...

CBR Staff Writer Published 21 May 2013

Only 13.4% use unified communications within their operation

About 68.9% of retail executives were not familiar with, or fully aware of, the advantages of unified communications technology, according to a new report.

The new report, commissioned by Elite Telecom, in association with UC manufacturer, Swyx and Retail Week, revealed that the retail sector faces the danger of being surpassed by other industries for failing to invest in unified communications (UC) technology.

Elite Telecom CEO Matt Newing said as an industry that is facing enormous pressure to adapt to increased competition, especially from digital and online channels, unified communications is an investment that many retailers cannot afford to miss out on.

"Unified communications is all about the end user experience and helping to deliver smoother, streamlined services to customers both in store and online," Newing said.

"Customers are more likely to return to businesses that have exceeded their expectations and offered them something different."

About 39.3% of surveyed, who consider deploying unified communications, would be driven by the requirement to enhance customer service, while other influencers included the need to trim down overheads (19.6%) and boost staff productivity (17.9%).

"Unified communications enhances the communication at every stage of the purchase cycle: Investing in UC allows retailers to optimise processes whilst improving quality in their user journey, offering loyalty to the customer to increase sales and profits," Matt added.

"Those businesses that are too slow to adapt to technology advances or to internet-led services will simply not be here in two to three years' time."

About 41% of survey respondents suggested that social media and other multi-media channels would be the biggest trend to face the retail sector over the following 12 months, while 33% were with mobility and fixed mobile convergence trends.

Swyx CEO Ralf Ebbinghaus said the launch of UC can also significantly cut overheads for retailers, especially those with several sites.

"They can take advantage of free calls between outlets using VoIP and can also centralise customer enquiries for multiple locations," Ebbinghaus said.

The survey presses on communicating the business benefits of UC to the retail sector as 41.2% admitted to having never heard of unified communications technology until now.

Conversely, about 37.5% of respondents revealed that cost was also major obstacle for implementing the technology, with only 13.4% of respondents using unified communications within their operation.

Microsoft Xbox One FAQ responds to always-on DRM, used games rumors

Microsoft Xbox One FAQ responds to alwayson DRM, used games rumors

One of the more contentious rumors surrounding next-gen consoles has been potential changes to DRM and while Microsoft hasn't answered all our questions when it comes to the Xbox One, it took a few head on. The official FAQ starts off with the "always-on" DRM issue and also addresses used games, indicating that the box is designed "so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection," and that it does not have to always be connected. That said, it still "requires" a connection to the internet, promising cloud-based benefits for gameplay and more. Other questions answer things like whether the new console will require more power (no) and will our Xbox Live Gold subscriptions still work with the new and old hardware (yes).

When it comes to used games, the FAQ's response is also promising, stating "We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games." We can still find enough wiggle room in those responses to remain curious, but it appears we should be able to avoid a SimCity-style meltdown (with our new games, since the old ones won't work.)
